Annoyances - Google Needs to Consider Negative Adwords for Publishers
Tuesday, September 09, 2008
By using "negative adwords" an advertiser can get his or her ads placed within more relevant content. Unfortunately, publishers don’t have the ability to filter out advertisers in the same manner. I’d never really thought about it in the past, but in the last few weeks, it’s become apparent to me that Google should consider implementing this.
Annoyances - Sun Microsystems Bundles Yahoo Toolbar with Java Update
Wednesday, July 23, 2008
I had my laptop booted to Windows all weekend and the first part of this week while I worked on a couple of site layouts. Since I spend most of my time booted to Linux, when I do fire up Windows I'm immediately bombarded with update notifications. So I spent a good deal of last night updating this and that. I was really annoyed by what I found after installing the latest Java update from Java.

This site is going to be undergoing some major changes over the next several days. If you're a client of ours, you might find it difficult to get into the billing system. If you owe us money, we'll contact you when the system is back online. Consider your due dates extended by however long it takes me to get everything back online. The module on which I built the billing system doesn't get along well with the new version of PostNuke (now Zikula). But it's mostly cosmetic at this point. The hard work is done.
Advertising - Be Cafeful With YouTube Ad Units
Thursday, December 13, 2007
My ad guru is out of town for the holidays. He's the one that comes in when we're ready to start placing ad content on a client's site. Well, I got to that point with a client's site today so I started doing what I've seen him do a thousand times. Then, my client suggested that maybe we should get creative and stick some video ad units on the site. It seemed simple enough, but the result was a little shocking.
Linux - Why We're A Linux Shop

The home office of DreamingMonkey.com is occupied by a bunch of open-source junkies. Of the whole gang, I'm the only one that has a Windows installation anywhere. My laptop is dual-boot (Slackware 12 and Windows XP Home Edition). I occasionally boot to Windows to see what our sites look like in IE and once in a great while I have to fire up Flash for a project. The problem is that in our line of work, we all become the system administrators for our respective friends and families. That often means late nights cleaning spyware off the neighbor's computer in exchange for a six-pack of beer. This week, I had two Windows boxes dropped off at the office for repair and both of them served to remind me exactly why I abandoned Windows years ago.
